Teen rushed to hospital after police-involved shooting in Mississauga

Teen shot by police in Mississauga, Ont., during July robbery call dies of injuries

A 15-year-old boy was rushed to Sick Kids Hospital in serious condition early Thursday morning following a shooting involving police at Britannia Road and Creditview Road in Mississauga.

Peel police were called to a plaza in the area shortly before 2 a.m. for reports of three young males involved in a robbery at a gas station, Jason Gennaro, spokesperson for the province's Special Investigations Unit, told reporters at the scene.

Before police arrived, two of the males fled the scene, he said. One male remained and allegedly tried to rob another business at the plaza. He then tried to enter three separate cars with people inside, Gennaro said.

Officers located the third male outside the bank in the plaza.

"There was an altercation and one police officer discharged a firearm," an SIU news release said.

A 15-year-old male was taken to hospital with serious wounds, Gennaro said, adding that the teen is in hospital in serious, but stable condition.

The SIU has taken over the investigation into the shooting. The provincial agency probes incidents involving police that result in serious injury or death or involve allegations of sexual assault.

Six investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case, Gennaro said.

Gennaro said investigators will look for video surveillance footage from businesses at the plaza, but also appealed for witnesses to come forward.

"We're also asking that anyone who might have been in the area at this time that would have captured something on their cellphone to provide us with that information," Gennaro said.

The plaza was expected to remain closed for some time, and workers were asked to call their employers to find out whether they should go to work.

Meanwhile, Peel police have yet to catch up to the two males who fled the scene. It is believed they fled in a grey vehicle, Gennaro said.
