Teenager who was already in jail charged with murder, Columbus police say

Muscogee County murder suspect charged, teenager was already in jail on an unrelated case and now faces homicide case.

A 17-year-old has been charged with murder several months after a fatal shooting in Columbus, the Columbus Police Department announced Tuesday.

The teenager was identified as a suspect in the death of 25-year-old Willie Harris Jr., who was shot in the 3100 block of Victory Drive in April, police said. Investigators gathered enough evidence to get a warrant. The 17-year-old already was in the Muscogee County Jail on an unrelated offense, so police served him with the warrant in jail. His new charges include murder and possessing a gun during the commission of a crime.

The Ledger-Enquirer doesn’t identify crime suspects under the age of 18.

The suspect was scheduled to appear in court Friday, police said.
