Teghan's top 5 things to do this weekend in and near Winnipeg (Aug. 18-20)

Teghan's top 5 things to do this weekend in and near Winnipeg (Aug. 18-20)

There are four major music festivals on this weekend, with two in the city and two out of town.

Interstellar Rodeo and MEMETIC are going head to head in Winnipeg, and Rainbow Trout and Harvest Sun are on if you feel like a road trip.

There's also a great art party on at Plug In Friday night, and Handsome Daughter has a fantastic show with a B.C. band and locals Basic Nature.

WHAT: MUSIC — Interstellar Rodeo

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Where: The Forks at 1 Forks Market Rd.

Cost: $100 to $250

Interstellar Rodeo is back with an extremely impressive lineup this year.

My top pick for the fest is Father John Misty's set Friday night at 9 p.m., but if you aren't getting full fest passes it'll cost you $100 to see him.

Greg MacPherson's new band Figure Walking is also playing right before at 8:30 p.m., which will be worth catching.

Saturday might be the best bang for your buck ticket-wise because Beck is going to be there, and I recommend going early in the day so you can catch Leonard Sumner and Faouzia.

Sunday the must-see acts are The Dead South in the afternoon and the big one, Broken Social Scene, are closing out the night.

Interstellar has fully licensed grounds so you won't be stuck in a beer tent if you want to have a few drinks, and they're going to have about a dozen food trucks on site including Pop Cart and A Little Pizza Heaven.

WHAT: FEST — Rainbow Trout

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Where: Oroseau rapids park near St. Malo, Man.

Cost: $25 to $75

If Interstellar is too rich for your blood or you're just looking for a chiller vibe this weekend, Rainbow Trout is happening near St. Malo.

They've got 3Peat, Jenny Berkel, European Vacation, Slow Spirit, ATLAAS and Lev Snowe, as well as a bunch of other acts.

The drive is a bit over an hour and camping passes are sold out so pick a designated driver and pack snacks.

This one is kid friendly, but there isn't any extra programming for kids, so you will have to entertain them if you bring them.

WHAT: ART — Drawing the Curtain launch party

When: Friday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m.

Where: Plug In gallery at 460 Portage Ave.

Cost: FREE

STAGES: Drawing the Curtain is having a preview/launch party Friday night at Plug In on Portage Avenue.

This is a fairly ambitious public art project with sculptures and performances going up over the next two weeks across the city.

They're bringing in artists from London, Costa Rica, Norway, Glasgow and a bunch of other places for the shows. There are events planned in the vacant Hudson's Bay basement downtown, the CKUW radio station, a public park fountain and one is even planned on a flatbed truck.

Friday night you can meet a bunch of the artists who will be in town, there'll be a drag show, DJs, drinks, food and work from Winnipeg artist Divya Mehra.

WHAT: FEST — Harvest Sun

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Where: Kelwood, Man.

Cost: $35 to $90

This music festival is a bit of a trek, but the lineup is really impressive.

Iskwe, William Prince, SC Mira, Carly Dow and The Noble Thiefs are just a few of the artists playing this year.

There's still camping available here, so if you do the longer drive out there, you might as well stay the night.

There'll also be a bunch of workshops and tons of programming for kids, so if you've got them and still want to go to a music festival this weekend, this might be the best option.

If you don't, Iskwe is going to be performing, so that should be enough to sell it!

WHAT: MUSIC — Douse and Basic Nature

When: Sunday, Aug. 20 at 8 p.m.

Where: The Handsome Daughter at 61 Sherbrook St.

Cost: $10

Music festivals don't have the market cornered on good shows this weekend.

Check out British Columbia's Douse and Winnipeg's Basic Nature at The Handsome Daughter Sunday night.

They're playing with Trampoline for $10.

If you like Basic Nature, you'll love Douse, and it'll likely be one of your only chances to see them live, because they're here all the way from the West Coast.

Douse is Alea Rae's new thing, if you're more familiar with her work.
