Texas man had 13-year-old drive him for ice cream because he was too drunk, cops say
A police officer in Lubbock, Texas, pulled over a car for failing to yield after the officer had to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident — and then found a 13-year-old behind the wheel, according to a police report.
The officer walked up to the driver and asked for her license and proof of insurance, but the driver said she didn’t have a license, according to a Sept. 9 incident report from the Lubbock Police Department.
The officer asked her how old she was, and she said 13, the report says. The driver also told the officer she was “driving her stepfather to get ice cream because he was drunk.”
Her stepfather, who was sitting in the passenger seat, confirmed “they had just gone out to get some ice cream.” The officer could smell alcohol on him, according to the report.
The officer asked the stepfather for his ID and he fumbled to take out of his wallet, police said. When the officer tried to put the man in handcuffs, he “swayed and turned multiple times making it difficult to place him in handcuffs,” according to police.
The officer took the man to the Lubbock County detention center on a charge of child endangerment, police said.
The man is not being named to protect the identity of the 13-year-old.
