Thanksgiving holiday #nltraffic focus of police operation

Police across Newfoundland and Labrador will be on the look-out over the holiday weekend for traffic violators.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and RCMP join forces for 'Operation Impact.'

The annual event started Friday and runs until Oct. 12.

Operation Impact is a zero-tolerance enforcement initiative focused on impaired driving, distracted driving — including cell phone use and texting — seatbelt use and aggressive driving.

The goal is to enforce safety on the province's roads while educating drivers.

"This national initiative is in keeping with the RNC priority of ensuring road safety and is a direct response to the kind of devastation that can result from unsafe driving practices," RNC Chief William Janes said in a release.

There will be an increase in police presence on highways, and police checkpoints will be set-up at various locations across the province.
