The Studio Behind YA Flop Allegiant Admits The Movie Wasn't Great

Well, this is nice and honest, at least.

Jon Feltheimer, the CEO of indie studio Lionsgate, has admitted the film ‘Allegiant’ might have been rushed out a bit too quickly.

As reported by The Wrap, Feltheimer said during a conference call to Wall Street analysts: “Maybe we rushed the third movie a bit instead of taking our time with it.

“We wanted to hit a date.”

And while dates are important, it obviously shouldn’t come at the expense of getting a movie right.

The Shailene Woodley film, the third in the ‘Divergent’ series and based on Veronica Roth’s dystopian YA novels, was a great disappointment both financially and critically.

It made just $66 million (£45 million) in the US, and $170 million (£115 million) altogether, at a cost of $110 million (£75 million).

Though more than its production budget, with marketing and advertising costs, it most likely won’t have made a penny in profit.

It was also hammered by critics, sitting with a 12% 'fresh’ rating on reviews aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

By comparison, the previous movie 'Insurgent’ made $297 million (£202 million), while the first movie 'Divergent’ made $288 million (£196 million).

There’s one more movie to come, 'Ascendent’, which, according to The Hollywood Reporter, has had its budget slashed after the disappointment of 'Allegiant’.

Lionsgate, which is also behind the rebooted 'Power Rangers’ movie, has been seeking a franchise worthy of replacing 'The Hunger Games’ and prior to that the 'Twilight’ series, which together hauled in over $6 billion for the studio.

'The Divergent Series: Ascendent’ is due out in June next year.
