Good news for Dutton fans, the Yellowstone universe is getting even bigger.

In February, streaming service Paramount+ announced that, in addition to picking up the wildly popular 1883 for further episodes, they've also ordered a whole new chapter of the Dutton family's history.

The show held its Los Angeles premiere ahead of the official release later this month with many of the show's stars, including Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford walking the gold carpet.

"To be able to be a part of a franchise in a world that is so singular on American television is very exciting. There’s nothing else quite like it," Mirren told The Hollywood Reporter at the event. The star also opened up about Sheridan himself, saying, "He’s fabulously hands-off. He presents the script, and it’s so extraordinary that you don’t want to change a word. You want to do it exactly as it’s written because it’s written with incredible precision but without being labored."

Sheridan himself didn't attend the premiere, reportedly busy cutting new episodes of the show.

When does 1923 premiere?

The first episode of 1923 will debut on Paramount+ on December 18, 2022.

The cast is stacked.

Some big names will be heading up the cast: Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford. Ford will be playing Jacob Dutton, the brother of 1883's James Dutton, and Mirren will play his wife, Cara.

It's not the duo's first time working together—they also starred in the 1986 film The Mosquito Coast. "When we first worked together, he was a huge movie star and I was like nobody, so I was very intimidated," Mirren told Variety. "I learned a lot from him because I hadn’t done a lot. I had done a lot of theater at that point, [but] I hadn’t done a lot of movies. So I watched him and he taught me a great deal about film acting that, to this day, I’m still using."

Ford echoed her esteem, saying "I admired her work and her person then, and I hold the same degree of admiration for her. She’s just a lovely person, so it’s been both a professional pleasure and also a personal pleasure to be able to work with her again."

Mirren and Ford won't be the only new members of the Dutton family to appear, of course. Also among the announced cast are James Badge Dale, who will play John Dutton Sr. (the character appeared as a child on 1883), as well as Marley Shelton, playing his wife, Emma Dutton, Darren Mann as Jack Dutton, their son, and Brandon Sklenar, who will play Spencer Dutton, John's brother.

There's been no news about any possible appearance by John Dutton Jr., who goes on to become the father of Yellowstone's patriarch, John, and it's not currently clear whether he'll appear in the show.

Michelle Randolph, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, Sebastian Roche, Robert Patrick, and Julia Schlaepfer have also been announced as part of the cast. Joining them will be Jerome Flynn, perhaps best know to fans as Bronn from Game of Thrones, who will reportedly play a Scottish shepherd and local leader who's expected to be an antagonist in the series.

The first photos from the show have been released.

Just over a month before the show's premiere, Paramount+ shared the first images of stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren in character as Jacob and Cara Dutton. Take a look at the photos below:

Mirren opened up about her character to Vanity Fair, saying "I see Cara as an immigrant. One of the things I very strongly wanted was that she would speak with an Irish accent, not with an American accent. It’s always slightly annoyed me with Westerns that you have all these people speaking with modern American accents when in fact so many of them were fairly recent immigrants."

"These are two people with a very strong bond to each other who are facing really complicated circumstances," Ford told Vanity Fair. "Their lives are totally wrapped up in each other. There’s very little that sustains them other than themselves and the hard work and investment they put into their future and their family. It is a tough life, and it’s full of not just physical challenges but moral ones as well."

Mirren added, "They’ve been married a long time. They haven’t had children, so they haven’t had the sense of children holding them together. ... An incredible partnership where you can be honest with each other, and your love and support of each other is total, but at the same time you are no longer blinded by love or by lust. You’re much more clear-eyed about your relationship, but the relationship becomes all the stronger for that very reason."

What is 1923 about?

The show was originally titled 1932, however, the streamer later announced that it had been changed to 1923. The backshift in the timeline appears to be designed to allow the show to address the fallout from World War I, as well as the early era of the Great Depression. Per a release on the title change, "1923 focuses on the Dutton family’s next two generations as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness and prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle theft; all battled beneath the cloud of Montana’s great depression, which preceded the nation by almost a decade."

A synopsis released in May stated that 1923 will be a new origin story that, "Will introduce a new generation of the Dutton family and explore the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home." Beyond that, plot details have been scarce.

The show will be produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, which also produces Yellowstone and 1883, as well as Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan's Mayor of Kingstown.

“With the brilliant mind and gifted storytelling of Taylor Sheridan, we have created an entirely new world to explore with 1883 while expanding Yellowstone, and with 1932 [now 1923] we will open up a new chapter in this rapidly growing universe,” said ViacomCBS Media Networks and MTV Entertainment Studios president and CEO Chris McCarthy.

Will it have more than one season?

While there's been no official announcement, Deadline reports that there are plans to bring the show back for a second season, with negotiations already rumored to be underway to bring the cast back for another outing.

Where does it fit into the Sheridan-verse?

Since the success of Yellowstone, creator Taylor Sheridan has become a hot commodity, with nearly a dozen shows currently in some level of development or production under the Paramount umbrella—a roster that the creator himself calls "excessive."

Along with 1883, whose future plans are unclear beyond the order for additional episodes, and the upcoming fifth season for Yellowstone, 1923 joins the still mysterious (but also numerically named) 6666, which, indications suggest, will be a contemporaneous spin-off of Yellowstone rather than a historical prequel. The previously announced Bass Reeves project starring David Oyelowo as the titular US Marshal, has alternately appeared under the titles Bass Reeves and 1883: The Bass Reeves Story suggesting it may also function as a spin-off or sister series in the Yellowstone universe as well.

Outside of the world of the Duttons, Sheridan is also a showrunner on the Jeremy Renner-fronted Mayor of Kingstown, which has been renewed for a second season, Tulsa King, a modern gangster drama starring Sylvester Stallone which has also been greenlit for a second season, the Zoe Saldaña-led spy thriller Lioness, and a Billy Bob Thornton-starring oil company drama called Land Man.
