This huge mountain of waste, including dirty nappies, was found fly-tipped on a country lane

Villagers were left horrified after a mountain of waste was dumped in a quiet country lane.

The huge mound of steaming rubbish including food and dirty nappies appeared on the road near Yoxall in Staffordshire.

It is thought it may have been dumped by a lorry after its driver realised it had reached a dead end.

Villagers in Yoxall are furious, and have labelled the mound a “total health hazard”.

The incident is being investigated by the Environment Agency, but locals are up in arms over the potential fallout from the dumping, including the potential cost for them to dispose of the rubbish.

Just days before the rubbish was found, a Staffordshire farmer was reportedly told he would have to pay up to £10,000 to remove two huge lorry loads of rubbish that he found dumped on his driveway after fly-tippers accessed it by cutting padlocks off his gate.

Although Environment Agency officials are looking into the offence, neighbour Kathy Shaw questioned the regulations that will see victims having to pay thousands to dispose of the rubbish.

The former town, borough and county councillor said: “My neighbours are devastated that they’ve been left with this problem of someone else’s making. I’d like to draw attention to the fact that this isn’t just ordinary tipping of household waste.”

Fallout – locals are concerned that they will have to foot the bill for disposing of the rubbish

A spokesman for East Staffordshire Borough Council, which deals with fly-tipping on public land, said the authority had no jurisdiction in this case, but had spoken to the landowner in “an advisory capacity”.

Of the mountain of rubbish in Yoxall, an Environment Agency spokesman said: “We’re investigating following reports of shredded waste being dumped on private land in the Uttoxeter area.

“We’re also providing advice and guidance about how this waste can be removed safely and legally. Everyone has a part to play to help crack down on waste crime.”
