Police examining materials left by Nashville school attacker

Officers found written items along with a map describing how an assault on a Nashville elementary school would unfold, as well as a plan to shoot up a different school the assailant scrapped because of “too much security.’’

The attacker, identified as Audrey Elizabeth Hale, 28, gunned down three young students and three staff members at The Covenant School before being confronted and killed by police, authorities said.

  • The tragic incident is the nation's 89th shooting in a K-12 school this year, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database.

  • Police identified the victims in the shooting as Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney and Hallie Scruggs, all of them age 9, and Mike Hill, 61, Katherine Koonce, 60, and Cynthia Peak, 61.

  • President Joe Biden referred to the shooting as a "sick'' act and reiterated his call for Congress to ban assault weapons. He said: "We have to do more to protect our schools so they aren't turned into prisons."

Philadelphia water 'safe'

Panicked buyers grabbed armfuls of bottled water from store shelves across Philadelphia on Sunday after a ruptured pipe spilled at least 8,100 gallons of a latex chemical solution into the Delaware River, a source of drinking water for millions. The chemicals spilled late Friday at the Altuglas LLC chemical plant in Bristol, Pennsylvania, on the river about 17 miles northeast of Philadelphia. In a statement Monday, the city said the water available to customers has been treated and tested to confirm that it is "safe to drink and use for bathing, cooking, and washing." Read more
