After two years of the COVID-19 pandemic subduing western parties around Calgary, this year's Stampede with no health restrictions should draw out big crowds. One big feature of the "Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth" missing for the past two years was the iconic tents that sprout up around the city bringing music, dancing and drinking under one plastic roof. The usual suspects will be back for 2022, like Cowboys and Nashville North on the Stampede grounds. But there are also a couple of new ones t

TRIPOLI (Reuters) -Libyan protesters will keep demonstrating until all the ruling elites quit power, they said on Saturday, after rallies in most main cities on Friday culminated in a crowd storming the parliament building and torching parts of it. The protest movement said it would step up its campaign from Sunday, urging demonstrators to set up tents in city squares and practise civil disobedience until they achieve their goal of ousting political institutions and holding new elections. Security vehicles surrounded government buildings in the capital after sunset on Saturday and there was no sign of new protests after Friday's rallies demanding change.
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York lawmakers began a special legislative session Thursday with the intent of limiting the proliferation of firearms in public after the Supreme Court gutted the state’s century-old handgun licensing law. The state is overhauling its rules for carrying guns after the court decided that ordinary citizens had a right to arm themselves in public for self-defense, something New York had limited mostly to people working in law enforcement or security. ROME (AP) — Pope Francis urged the people and leaders of Congo and South Sudan on Saturday to “turn a page” and forge new paths of reconciliation, peace and development. In the message, Francis said he was “greatly disappointed” to not be able to travel and promised to visit
Medication abortions became the preferred method for ending pregnancy in the U.S. even before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. These involve taking two prescription medicines days apart — at home or in a clinic. Abortion procedures are an invasive medical technique that empties the womb. They are sometimes called surgical abortions, although they don’t involve surgery. Abortion by pills involves the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol. As more states seek abortion limits, demand for the

JERUSALEM (Reuters) -Lebanon's Hezbollah said on Saturday it had sent three unarmed drones towards an Israeli Mediterranean gas rig, which the Israeli military said it had intercepted. There was no immediate response from Lebanese authorities to the incident, which came amid tensions over the location of the Israeli rig and long-standing but so-far fruitless U.S.-mediated efforts to agree on a maritime border. Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz said Hezbollah was "preventing the state of Lebanon from reaching an agreement regarding maritime borders, which are critical to the economy and prosperity of the Lebanese nation".
Randy Bachman has performed many times on Canada Day, but the event he played this year is like no other. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California will not consider amending its constitution to eliminate indentured servitude as a possible punishment for crime after Gov. Gavin Newsom's administration predicted that it could cost the state billions of dollars to pay minimum wage to prison inmates. Democratic Sen. Sydney Kamlager said Thursday that she ran out of time and supporters after the measure barring involuntary work without pay last week fell seven votes short of the two-thirds margin it needed in
It was big day for dozens of people across the country as they became Canadian citizens. For one family in the Halifax area, the opportunity was extra special because they got to say their oath in person — the first to do so since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Ismail Subair, his wife, Oluwaseun, and their sons, Aman and Miraj, attended the ceremony Friday that featured families across the country who were participating virtually. "It means a whole lot," said Ismail Subair. "It's a big thing to be
