Expect moderate to heavy rain with thunder over Singapore in the next few days due to an ongoing monsoon surge, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said on Wednesday (10 January).

The monsoon surge – a strengthening of northeasterly winds from a strong high-pressure system in north Asia towards the South China Sea – is forecast to persist for several days.

“Overcast and windy conditions with periods of moderate to heavy rain, at times with thunder, are expected over Singapore for today and the next few days,” said the NEA in an advisory on its website.

Daily temperatures during the period are expected to range between 22°C and 28°C, the agency added.

This comes after flash floods occurred in nine locations in eastern Singapore on Monday following heavy showers in the morning.

The affected areas were Tampines Road (opposite Jalan Teliti), Tampines Ave 12 (opposite Tampines Eco Green), Arumugam Road, Sims Ave/Eunos Road 8, Sims Ave/Tanjong Katong Road, Jalan Nipah, Bedok Road/New Upper Changi Road, Upper Changi Road/Bedok North Ave 4 and Bedok Road/Upper Changi Road East, said the Public Utilities Board (PUB).

A handful of the reported locations were “hotspots” with a history of flooding due to localised conditions or “subjected to tidal influence”, PUB added in a press release issued on the same evening.

Drainage improvement works by the PUB to enhance flood protection for these locations are ongoing. Further investigations on Tampines Ave 12 are being carried out, it said.

The heaviest rainfall on Monday at the Kim Chuan Road rain gauge between 6.20am to 10.25am was recorded at 118.8mm, about half of Singapore’s average monthly rainfall in January.
