Tim McGraw Pays Tribute to Late 'Maverick' Toby Keith: 'He Did Things His Way, on His Terms'

"We all will miss you, brother," the country star wrote in his post honoring Keith, who died of stomach cancer Monday at age 62

Tim McGraw is paying tribute to the late Toby Keith.

In an Instagram post shared after Keith's death on Monday at the age of 62, the actor and fellow country singer, 56, posted a carousel of photos to Instagram paying tribute to the man he called "brother."

The carousel included the cover art of both of their debut albums, which were released on the same day in 1993, and a black and white image of Keith staring off into the distance while wearing a cowboy hat that obscured his face.

"Our self titled debuts came out on the same day, April 20, 1993… Toby and I spent quite a bit of time together early in our careers," McGraw wrote, noting that they spent a lot of time together talking about their goals in life and in their careers.

"He was a maverick. He did things his way, on his terms, a true artist," McGraw said of the "My List" singer. "I always have and always will have tremendous respect for his artistry, dedication and fearlessness to do his thing."

McGraw signed off the tribute saying, "We all will miss you, brother."

Keith died on Monday after being diagnosed with stomach cancer in the fall of 2021. His death was announced via a post on his social media accounts.

"Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on Feb. 5 surrounded by his family," the statement read in part. “He fought his fight with grace and courage."

His longtime friend and rep Elaine Schock shared with PEOPLE in an exclusive statement on Tuesday following his death.

"I loved Toby Keith," she said. "He was brilliant, fun to be with and we would have some robust discussions. Plus, he could write and sing his ass off."

She also said that she felt her client was often "misunderstood."

"Toby was kind. I think he was misunderstood because he was painted a certain way but that was an incorrect portrait. He was so much more. He was certainly one of the most courageous men I knew," Schock added.
