Tim Walz's Mom Weighs In On The Rift Between Her Liberal And Conservative Sons

Darlene Walz, the mother of Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, has addressed the rift between her sons.

Jeff Walz made headlines over the weekend with a series of Facebook posts criticizing his younger sibling. “I’m 100% opposed to all his ideology,” he wrote, adding that he was considering publicly endorsing Republican nominee Donald Trump. He said he hadn’t spoken to his brother, the governor of Minnesota, in eight years.

Darlene Walz, 89, told the Daily Beast this week she wants her son and Vice President Kamala Harris to defeat Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), in November, but she doesn’t want to get involved in the drama between her two sons.

“I think the best thing maybe, for me, is to just stay out of it,” she said.

She’s a lifelong Democrat who campaigned for Tim Walz during his successful congressional and gubernatorial campaigns, according to the Daily Beast.

She said she “got along just fine” with her conservative son during a recent visit to his home in Florida — they just avoided talk of politics.

She acknowledged that most families in the U.S. include both Republicans and Democrats, and “that’s OK.” Her advice to those divided families? “Keep your mouth shut and go vote.”

Their family divisions were also on display in another incident this week. A photo circulated on social media showing a group of people wearing shirts that read “Nebraska Walz’s for Trump.”

Tim and Jeff Walz’s sister, Sandy Dietrich, said the Trump supporters are distant cousins whom they don’t know.
