Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer Will Star in the Call Me by Your Name Sequel

And now for some good news: Fans of the 2017 film Call Me by Your Name have an upcoming sequel to look forward to—and it will feature its two original stars, Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. The first film’s director, Luca Guadagnino, will also direct the follow-up, and he confirmed the news to La Repubblica this past week: “Of course, it was a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Esther Garrel, and the other actors,” he told the publication. “They will all be in the new film.”

The first film was based on the 2007 book of the same name by American author André Aciman; set in Italy in the 1980s, it followed the star-crossed relationship between a 17-year-old Elio Perlman (Chalamet) and a visiting 24-year-old scholar named Oliver (Hammer). Aciman has since penned a follow-up to the initial book, titled Find Me, which the film sequel will likely be based on. It explores Elio and Oliver’s relationship more than a decade later, but the story line is also largely focused on Elio’s father, who develops a relationship with a woman half his age.

Chalamet earned a best-actor nod at the Oscars in 2018 for the role and has expressed a willingness to star in a follow-up. Hammer, meanwhile, has raised concerns in the past about bringing a sequel to the big screen. “[The first one] felt like a really perfect storm of so many things, that if we do make a second one, I think we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment,” Hammer told Vulture last year. “I don’t know that anything will match up to the first, you know? … I mean, look. If we end up with an incredible script, and Timmy’s in, and Luca’s in, I’d be an asshole to say no.” (Looks like an incredible script could be on the horizon then.)

As of now, the project has yet to hit ground; many parts of the world, including Italy, where Guadagnino is based, continue to be under lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic. Still, the director has already begun thinking about screenwriters for the project despite its current delays. “I went to America to meet a writer I love very much, whose name I don’t want to mention, to talk about the second part,” he said of a meeting before the COVID-19 pandemic begun. Consider it a bit of hopeful news to look forward to in the near future.
