Titans 247-pound RB Derrick Henry hit 21.6 mph on his long TD run, thinks that was 'slow'

If you’re a 247-pound running back in this era, well, you’ve probably been long ago moved to another position like outside linebacker or tight end, for starters. But if you are still at running back, you’re likely the type to be grinding it out 3 yards at a time.

Hopefully we can appreciate that in a league full of elite athletes, Derrick Henry is a unicorn. The Tennessee Titans star is on a list of five players through NFL history with multiple 90-yard runs, joining Lamar Miller, Bo Jackson, Ahman Green and Chris Johnson. Henry got his second 90-yard run on Sunday, a 94-yarder to go with a 99-yard score he had against the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier in his career.

The Jaguars run was an all-timer because he used his strength to throw multiple defenders out of the way. The one on Sunday was impressive because of his breathtaking breakaway speed. He reached a speed that only two other ballcarriers in the NFL have reached this season. And Henry was upset because he thought it was slow.

Again, Henry is 247 pounds.

Derrick Henry reached an incredible speed

Henry reached a speed of 21.62 miles per hour on his touchdown run, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. Raheem Mostert of the San Francisco 49ers has the two fastest runs in the NFL this year, and Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Michael Davis got to 21.68 mph on an interception return. They’re the only ballcarriers who have registered a higher speed than Henry.

Mostert is 205 pounds. Davis is 195. Henry is built like an armored tank.

The scary part is Henry thinks he should have gotten to the 22 mph mark.

Please don’t get in Henry’s way if he reaches 22 mph. For your safety.

Henry is one of the NFL’s best

Henry had an impressive 4.54-second 40-yard dash at his NFL scouting combine. And, based on Sunday’s run, it seems he’s the type who plays even faster in pads.

It took the Titans way too long to figure out Henry was a premier back in the NFL, but it happened. He won the rushing title last season, is as good of a bet as any to win it again this season, and could even get some MVP buzz if he keeps putting up huge games for an undefeated Titans team.

And now we have something new to hope for: Henry breaking into the open field and seeing if he can reach that 22 mph mark he says he can get to.
