TMC MP Mahua Moitra says ICMR's vaccine deadline to 'spice up' PM Modi's Independence Day speech
Mahua Moitra, the Trinamool Congress MP from Krishnanagar, West Bengal has targeted Prime Minister Modi using the controversy over ICMR’s August 15 deadline for an indigenous COVID-19 vaccine as a prop.
On Monday, Moitra took to social media and hinted that Modi was pressurising authorities for a quick launch of the 'Covaxin’ vaccine to 'spice up' his Independence day speech.
First time in the history of modern science that a vaccine is having to meet a deadline to spice up a PM’s Independance day speech

Moitra said that this is the 'first time in the history of modern science that a vaccine is having to meet a deadline’.
ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava had earlier stated that there are plans to launch the indigenous vaccine by August 15, after it was recently approved to proceed to clinical trials.
Moitra is not alone to have criticised ICMR’s perceived rush for the vaccine launch. The Congress party too had said it was dangerous to announce deadlines in order to make headlines.
Bharat Biotech is a fine company. Its founder says vaccine CAN be ready by end-2020. Great. But it’s dangerous for ‘Sarvagyani’ to fix August 15 for vaccine trial to be completed & destroy ICMR’s credibility. Managing headlines by deadlines violates all norms & safety protocols.

Twelve institutes across the country have been identified for the vaccine trials.
