·2 min read

The TNRD has announced a proposed Mosquito Surveillance and Reduction Pest Management (PMP).

“This Pest Management Plan (PMP) will serve as a strategic management tool that will allow for the effective reduction of larval mosquitoes within specified mosquito surveillance and reduction areas of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District including all public, private and First Nations Reserve lands by permission of the applicable owner, agent or authority,” reads a statement on the TNRD website.

If the program moves ahead the TNRD will apply pesticides to reduce mosquitoes with designation mosquito surveillance and reduction areas in Electoral Areas A, B, J, L, M, N, O and P. This will include the municipalities of Kamloops, Logan Lake, Sun Peaks, Barriere, Chase and Clearwater, but will exclude the City of Merritt.

The proposed duration of the program will be from Mar. 1, 2021 to Feb. 28, 2026.

The TNRD currently carries out mosquito reduction within Electoral Areas J, L, M, O and P; within a 10km radius surrounding and including the community of Blue River; Electoral Area N, excluding the area around the Coquihalla Summit Recreation Area; and a portion of Electoral A, with the exception of Wells Gray Provincial Park.

The pesticides applied will include varieties of Vectobac, VectoLex, Aquabac, Mosquito Dunks, and Altosid. These are all larvicides, which affect mosquito larvae and not adult mosquitoes. Adulticides will only be used under order from a Medical Health Officer from the Interior Health Authority or the Government of BC.

All mosquito surveillance and reduction activities will be undertaken in a manner that minimizes risk to the environment and human health,” continues the TNRD website

“This PMP addresses all required elements of a PMP as outlined in Section 58 of the BC Integrated Pest Management Regulation.”
