Today's weather: Sunny... and then more snow

Newfoundlanders woke up to sunny skies on Tuesday, ready to take in a beautiful spring day — but people on the island would be wise not to put away that winter clothing just yet.

That's because more snow, freezing rain and some generally messy weather is expected overnight and into Wednesday.

Environment Canada had most of the island under special weather statements and warnings on Tuesday, with a mixture of what it calls "wintry weather" on the way.

However, for those looking out their window Tuesday morning and seeing sunny skies and dry ground, there was still little sign of what is forecasted to come.

Rain is expected to begin over western, central and northeastern regions of the province Tuesday afternoon, and temperatures inland will fall to below freezing later in the evening, according to Environment Canada.

CBC meteorologist Ryan Snoddon said southeastern Newfoundland should continue to see mostly rain overnight, but that other areas of the island will see flurries and ice pellets mixing in.

The rain should change to snow Tuesday evening and then mix with or change to ice pellets during the late night hours, says Envrionment Canada, and then change back to rain again by Wednesday morning.

While special weather statements were in effect for much of the island, freezing rain warnings were in effect for parts of southwestern Newfoundland, including Burgeo and Channel-Port aux Basques.
