Toddler bitten by world’s most venomous snake suffers brain damage after ‘dying for six minutes’

A young boy suffered brain damage after he technically died for six minutes when he was attacked by the world’s most venomous snake.

Two-year-old Eli was collecting eggs from a chicken pen in his parent’s garden in Agnes Water, Queensland, Australia, when he was attacked by a deadly Coastal Taipan.

The toddler suffered a cardiac arrest as a result of the bites and ‘died’ for six minutes before paramedics revived him.

He was left fighting for his life in intensive care in Brisbane but he is now said to be out of ICU - but suffering brain damage as a result of the incident.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money towards the boy’s medical bills as his family keep a vigil by his side.

Family friend Blake Hyland wrote: “Some of you may have heard about two year old Eli from Agnes Water in Queensland who was bitten by a Coastal Taipan on the 26th of September while getting eggs from the chicken pen.

"He suffered a Cardiac Arrest due to the envenomation and was revived by paramedics but unfortunately is still fighting for his life at hospital in Brisbane.

“All positive thoughts go out to his family at this time and we are praying he makes a full recovery.”

In an update to the post, his mother Brittany added: “Eli has suffered some brain damage as a result of his cardiac arrest and subsequent lack of oxygen to the brain.

“We won’t know the extent until he starts to come too a bit more. He is very sensitive at the moment, very easily over stimulated.

“Speaking with Neurology Dr today, she is gathering her team to run all his necessary tests and start his rehabilitation ASAP. This will take weeks maybe months.”

Snake catcher Richie Gilbert told BuzzFeed News that the snake was likely searching for rats or mice when he was disturbed by Eli.

The coastal taipan is the third most venomous snake on the planet, and is responsible for around two deaths every year in Australia.
