Dolittle star Tom Holland has revealed the adorable way he prepared for his role in the movie.

The Marvel actor voices Doctor Dolittle's (Robert Downey Jr) dog Jip in the fantasy adventure film, so it only makes sense that Holland turned to the help of his own pet when it came down to getting ready for the role.

Appearing on stage during a Dolittle screening alongside his fellow cast members, Holland was asked how he'd worked on his "inner animal".

"I just based this character on Tess, really. I just brought Tess to the studio," Holland explained.

Co-star Downey Jr then asked for a round of applause from the audience for Holland's adorable Pit bull Tessa.

Over the weekend, Holland took to his Instagram page to share pictures from Dolittle's premiere in London, paying a sweet tribute to Tessa.

"So much fun this morning at the Dolittle London premiere," the actor wrote.

"I think it's safe to say that Tessa stole the show. Big love to the big man @robertdowneyjr and head to the link in my bio to get your pooch a brothers trust dogs collar."

The movie has received a critical mauling in its first reviews and it's not exactly done that well at the box office so far, with earnings of $57 million in the US last week.

Dolittle is out now in US cinemas, and arrives in the UK on February 7.
