The upcoming Tomb Raider sequel has been delayed indefinitely.

The movie, which will see Alicia Vikander return as Lara Croft after the 2018 reboot, was originally slated for a March 19, 2021 release.

However, studio MGM has now confirmed that plans have been put on hold, so we'll just have to wait and see when the Ben Wheatley-directed sequel will finally hit the big screen.

The delay isn't a huge surprise given that the sequel hasn't even begun filming yet, and the Rebecca director didn't seem to have much positive news in a recent chat with Digital Spy.

"Nothing's going on at the moment," he said of the project. "It's all a bit quiet on that front."

Meanwhile, Wheatley recently opened up about directing the new Rebecca adaptation for Netflix, expressing hope that it trolls the audience.

"I hope so," he explained to Polygon. "That's the heart of the du Maurier book. That's why this stuff in the south of France is so straight up.

"It's romantic. You can taste the white wine and you can feel [the] briny air and the warmth of the [sun]. It takes it all super seriously, and it's there to lull you into this feeling."

He added: "I wanted also what you get with '40s films, where they'll just stop in the middle of the film and do a song, the actress will just rock up and stand next to a piano, and a pop star of the day will play a tune and then Bogey will come in and the film will start again."
