Top 5 things to do in Winnipeg this weekend (Sept. 4-7)

It's going to be a miserably soggy weekend, so I have a whole bunch of indoor stuff you guys can check out this weekend.

Friday night, head down to the Tallest Poppy for the mural festival kickoff and then find your way to Club 60 in the Village for a DJ party with cheap drinks.

Saturday, The Good Will is hosting two very, very impressive local bands for $10.

And don't forget First Fridays or Burger week!

WHAT: ART – Wall-to-Wall launch at Tallest Poppy

When: Friday, Sept. 4 at 9 p.m.

Where: Tallest Poppy at 103 Sherbrook St.

Cost: FREE

Synonym Art is launching a mural festival this weekend at a whole bunch of spots across Winnipeg.

Wall-to-Wall will have 10 public art works go up by local artists at The Tallest Poppy, The Handsome Daughter, Hunter & Gunn, The Salvation Army, The Good Will, Fools & Horses Coffee, Urban Bakery, Frame Warehouse and Deer & Almond.

The fest will run all month with a bit party for Nuit Blanche to cap it all off.

But this weekend, they're kicking things off at Tallest Poppy with public art works by Gibril Bangura and Paul Robles. Anthony Sannie of The Lytics will be DJing, and if I know the Poppy, there'll be some amazing food.

WHAT: DJ – Casual Fridays at ANAF Club 60

When: Friday, Sept. 4 at 10 p.m.

Where: Osborne Village legion at 433 River Ave.

Cost: $5

Another lineup of incredibly talented female DJs is hitting the legion in Osborne Village this weekend.

These parties have really started to catch on, and the last one was packed with people dancing and it was such a good time.

The mood at these things is so inclusive, warm and easy going it really is worth checking out.

Oh, and drinks are dirt cheap, the AC is always up high and there's a patio.

This month they've got DJ Haunted Rain, DJ K Chedda, DJ Mens Rea and Girl Wonder. Maybe Mama Cutsworth will stop by to see her grads spin, too!

WHAT: FOOD – Burger week

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Where: Various locations

Cost: Varies by burger/location

That thing where you try to eat as many burgers as you possibly can without getting the meat sweats in front of your date is back.

Le Burger Week has wrangled about 30 different restaurants to make an exceptional burger.

A whole bunch of fancy places have signed on (hello Deer & Almond and Segovia!) and a whole bunch of your favourite breakfast places are also in the mix (oh hi Marion Street Eatery!)

Even Obby over at Shawarma Khan have a pretty impressive offering.

The prices all vary, but I haven't ran into any that are too expensive.

I recommend checking out Nick's on Broadway's burger and King + Bannatyne's doughnut-for-buns burger.

Whichever one you like the best you can vote for online or on Le Burger Week's app. This is basically a total popularity contest though, so don't expect your ugly duckling favourite to win.

WHAT: ART – First Fridays in the Exchange

When: Friday, Sept. 4 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Where: Various locations in the Exchange District

Cost: FREE

It's supposed to rain heavily Friday night, so why not go check out some galleries and chat with some lovely people?

The usual round of suspects will open their doors so you can check out art for free. Some will have wine and stuff and others will just have friendly people who will offer you unpretentious conversation about what's going on at their studio or gallery. It's pretty low-key and nice!

This weekend there's also a great art talk at 6 p.m. at the Free Press Café with George Toles, Willow Rector and David Churchill.

This event is not free, but whenever there is an opportunity to hear George talk, I urge people to go.

WHAT: MUSIC – Living Hour and Basic Nature at The Good Will

When: Saturday, Sept. 5 at 10 p.m.

Where: The Good Will at 625 Portage Ave.

Cost: $10

You guys! Let's go dance at The Good Will this weekend! They're having this cool party where two of my most favourite local bands are playing the same night.

Living Hour and Basic Nature are both on the bill, and tickets are only $10.

Living Hour are kicking off their North American tour that night and will head to a bunch of cool places before they're back on Oct. 22 at the Handsome Daughter.
