Top 5 things to do in Winnipeg this weekend (Nov. 27 to 29)

Top 5 things to do in Winnipeg this weekend (Nov. 27 to 29)

There's a lot more than just football happening in Winnipeg this weekend.

Friday night, there's a packed comedy show at the Park Theatre with Chantel Marostica, Dana Smith and Outside Joke.

Saturday, there's a great free concert at the Millennium Library with Greg MacPherson (yes!) and Sweet Alibi's Jess Rae Ayre.

A little later that afternoon, there's the Santa Claus Parade and a fancy dinner at Kitchen Sync.

And last but totally not least, the Grey Cup Festival is on all weekend with music and food and comedy.

WHAT: COMEDY – Empowherment at The Park Theatre

When: Friday, Nov. 27 at 9 p.m.

Where: The Park Theatre at 698 Osborne St.

Cost: $15 in advance, $20 at the door

Out of towners and locals alike should hit The Park Theatre Friday night for a massive comedy showcase.

Chantel Marostica's EmpowHERment show is back for a second go, and this time she's bringing in Dana Smith, Lara Rae, Jessica Seburn, Anjali Sandhu and Outside Joke.

The last time she did this the show sold out, and it was a super-fast paced, packed night of comedy.

The format is mainly stand-up comedy with a little improv and a little bit of sketch comedy.

Keep an eye out of Dana Smith's headlining set – it's the first time Winnipeg's getting to see her do a 20 minute set, and she slayed at the Winnipeg Comedy Festival last year.

If you can't nab tickets to this, the Park also has a great show Sunday night with Born Ruffians and Young Rival for $25.

WHAT: MUSIC – Greg MacPherson and Sweet Alibi's Jess Rae Ayre

When: Saturday, Nov. 28 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Where: Millennium Library at 251 Donald St.

Cost: FREE

The Winnipeg Folk Festival (I can't get enough of those guys lately) has a really lovely event booked downtown this weekend.

They're bringing in Greg MacPherson, Sweet Alibi's Jess Rae Ayre and two members of Red Moon Road for one big jam session in a library.

They call it a "workshop," but all it means is that all these talented people will be playing music together. For an audience. For free.

My guess is, despite the Grey Cup Festival and all the visitors in town, this will still be a pretty quiet show and you'll be able to get pretty up close to some extremely talented musicians and hear some incredible takes on their tracks…

I really can't wait to hear MacPherson and Ayre do something together. I'll Wait, I hope? Or Slow Stroke?

Anyway, I think you should go. It's free, and it will be cozy and nice!

WHAT: KIDS – Santa Claus Parade

When: Saturday, Nov. 28 at 4:30 p.m.

Where: Portage Avenue and Young Street

Cost: FREE

Pack your kids into their adorably oversized snowsuits, make some hot chocolate to inevitably/accidentally spill on strangers and make your way to the Santa Claus Parade this weekend!

It's back with all its floats and treats and costumes and merriment Saturday at 4 p.m.

The parade will start at 4:30 p.m. at Portage Avenue and Young Street and go east down Portage till it hits Main Street.

It'll take a little turn on Main, then to William Stephenson Way and end at Westbrook Street.

You can stay in one spot tho.

Keep your eyes peeled for the Youth Agencies Alliance float. Art City designed and built their float, and there are going to be giant puppets!

Plus, all the super nice folks who work there and make art there will be handing out art during the parade.

Best to go in a good mood because you will likely leave a little chilly and with at least one miniature candy cane stuck to your leg.

WHAT: FOOD – The Sentruhl Project

When: Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m.

Where: Kitchen Sync at 370 Donald St.

Cost: $58 (plus alcohol and taxes)

Have you heard of this super cool thing they do at Kitchen Sync every weekend?

It's called The Sentruhl Project, and it's basically just a bunch of talented chefs making up a new menu every week and then they cook a fancy four-course meal for you.

Right now, they're doing a heritage series – so they're creating menus based on the backgrounds of their crew.

They've already done France and Ireland, and this weekend they're doing Germany.

You have to make reservations in advance, but the good news is there are two nights of service for about 40 people each.

If you can't make it this weekend, they're doing Iceland next weekend and holiday menus after that.

WHAT: FESTIVAL – Grey Cup Fest

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Where: Various locations

Cost: FREE to… a lot of money

And now, the thing you've all been waiting for… Maybe you should go check out some Grey Cup Festival stuff this weekend.

Even if you're not into football, there are a ton of celebrations all weekend long that have nothing to do with sports!

On Friday, there's a good lineup at the convention centre with Saskatchewan's The Sheepdogs, The Trews and locals Attica Riots. Tickets to that are $40, and I'm guessing there's going to be local craft beer there. Maybe.

Saturday, there's free music at the street festival by the University of Winnipeg.

Dirty Catfish Brass Band is playing and DJ Co-Op and DJ Hunnicutt both have sets planned. Plus, the street festival stuff is free, and there's food trucks and drinks and lots of activities to check out.

Saturday night, there's a gala with comedian Gerry Dee (that guy is in town a lot lately, right?) and a few other events.

On Sunday I think there's a football game?
