Top Boy spoilers follow.

Top Boy director William Stefan Smith has revealed that an alternative ending to the series finale was filmed.

The crime-drama concluded earlier this year with its third series on Netflix, which succeeded a two-series stint on Channel 4, with the finale shocking viewers as Sully (Kane Robinson) was killed.

The identity of the killer remained a mystery in the episode, but Smith has revealed that this wasn't always the case, as an alternative ending disclosing the identity of the shooter was also filmed.

"The first way we shot the ending, we revealed the killer. That's what was on the page," he told Still Watching Netflix. "But then we had one more take and I was like 'let's do one where we don't see the killer'.

"We put that in the cut, gave it to Netflix [and] the execs, Ashley [Walters] and Kane saw it and I think everyone agreed it was just stronger. The idea of not showing the killer, for me, was [that] it could be anyone because Sully is a person that has so many enemies."

"The idea that one of these enemies came and shot him, for me, demonstrates what life can be like on the roads," he added. "I can understand some people want to know who killed Sully, but I won't be the one to tell you."

Smith isn't the only member of Top Boy crew to break down the finale, with Araloyin Oshunremi recently telling Digital Spy that he was shocked when he first read the cliffhanger in the script.

"I didn't know the end until very late. I was told on the way to a meeting in the car," he said. "When I got told the end in the car, I was kind of shocked. I didn't really expect it. But at the same time, everything has to come to an end. All characters must have an end, too."
