While big brother Brenden Aaronson appears to be headed to the Premier League and possibly the World Cup, Paxten Aaronson is poised to break out on his own. Paxten, 18, is a product of the Philadelphia Union's academy system, just like his brother. Both signed homegrown contracts with the Major League Soccer club. The younger Aaronson played more than 45 minutes for the Union on Sunday, coming in as a sub in Philadelphia's 2-0 victory over Portland. It was his longest stint on field in MLS play
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Biden administration has released the lease terms for offshore wind projects that would place hundreds of turbines in California's coastal waters — the first such project off the nation's Pacific coast. The two projects along the state's northern and central coasts are envisioned to generate up to 4.5 gigawatts of wind energy. That's enough to power about 1.5 million homes, the U.S. Department of the Interior said Thursday. Wind turbines could eventually cover up to
U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has apologized following the release of a report blaming him and senior officials for a string of alcohol-fuelled parties at 10 Downing Street that broke the government’s own COVID-19 lockdown rules.
OTTAWA (Reuters) -Canada's Supreme Court on Friday upheld a decision by a lower court to speed up the parole eligibility for the man convicted of gunning down six people in a mosque in 2017 and deemed a 2011 law that allowed lengthy parole sentencing as unconstitutional. Canada's top court was adjudicating on the case challenging a 2020 decision by a Quebec court to lower Alexandre Bissonnette's parole eligibility to 25 years from the original sentence that required him to wait much longer for the possibility of parole. The Supreme Court said that such a punishment removes a realistic possibility of parole and called it "incompatible with human dignity."
With two babies less than seven months apart in age, sleep is not something Courtney Sastaunik and her husband, Chris, have much time for these days. Despite all the care the two little ones need right now, the parents have been over the moon since their daughter, Kate Juli, came rushing into the world last week and completed the Regina family. Sastaunik's sister-in-law Tara Fortier was front and centre when the couple became parents once again — she was Sastaunik's surrogate, and gave birth to
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Adam Conover is certain that laughing and thinking at the same time is both possible and downright synergistic. He tested the approach in “Adam Ruins Everything,” in which he punctured conventional wisdom on matters ranging from charity to jaywalking. He's back with “The G Word" — that's “G” for government — a six-episode Netflix series now streaming that's aptly described as a comedy-documentary hybrid. A comic and writer from a family of scientists, Conover digs into how the
Tuba players don't often get much time in the spotlight. They will sit near the back of the stage, not usually attracting a lot of attention, adding bass depth to the melody or helping to keep the rhythm, passing the glamour roles to violins or trumpets. Emerson Hammill is an exception to that rule. At the MusicFest Canada earlier this month, the tubist earned the Slaight Music Outstanding Performer Award, after having been selected to play in the Canadian Junior Honour Band with about 100 other
Hannah Beaton began living in a shelter when she was five years old. Her mom was a single parent struggling to afford rent and daily expenses. Eventually, Beaton says, things "took a turn" and her mom had no other option besides Inn From The Cold, an emergency family shelter in downtown Calgary. Twenty-four years later, Beaton volunteers at the same place she says gave her young self hope for a different life. "I sometimes see young girls that were my age there, and all I want to do is tell them
The Conservatives are joining a growing number of calls for Canada Soccer to cancel a controversial exhibition game against Iran set for next month in Vancouver. The families of those who died aboard Flight PS752 when the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) shot down the plane in 2020 — killing all 176 passengers and crew members, including 85 Canadians and permanent residents — say they plan to protest outside the stadium if the match goes ahead. The families say they see the exhibition ma

The Ontario Liberals have lost another candidate with one week to go until voting day. Leader Steven Del Duca says Audrey Festeryga has withdrawn her candidacy in Chatham-Kent-Leamington and will no longer appear on the ballot for the Liberals. The development means there are now three ridings in which the Liberals aren't running a candidate for the June 2 provincial election. Festeryga had stepped in after the party dropped a previous candidate in the riding who had used a homophobic slur on so

The resumption of a murder trial in Moncton has been delayed several more weeks as lawyers explore issues raised by a psychiatrist's testimony about the accused. Calvin Andrew Lewis, 50, is charged with first-degree murder in the May 2, 2020, death of Tina Tingley-McAleer in Hillsborough, south of Moncton. "Nobody is ready to go ahead right now anyway, everyone needs more time," Court of Queen's Bench Justice Robert Dysart said Thursday when the case briefly returned to court. Lewis admitted sta
As carjackings in Toronto continue to surge, police say they are now investigating four similar incidents that happened in less than two hours in Scarborough overnight. The first happened at 11:44 p.m. in the McLevin Avenue and Greenspire Road area. Police say a person was standing beside their car in their driveway when a man approached with a gun and demanded the keys. The suspect was unsuccessful and took off empty-handed, police say. The second incident happened just five minutes later, in t
WASHINGTON (AP) — Sweden and Finland's push to join NATO won't require adding more U.S. ground forces into either country, the U.S. general nominated to take over European Command told senators Thursday. But Army Gen. Christopher Cavoli said military exercises and occasional American troop rotations will probably increase. Cavoli, who currently serves as head of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, said the increased military focus will probably continue to be on eastern Europe — where nations are more
