Toronto illegal rush-hour parking blitz coming Oct. 5

Toronto Mayor John Tory has announced a new enforcement blitz starting Oct. 5 on those who park illegally on major streets in central areas during rush hour.

Tory made the announcement at a joint news conference Wednesday morning outside city hall with police chief Mark Saunders.

As of Oct. 5, there will be more police enforcing rush hour parking rules in an area of the city bounded by Dufferin Street to the west, Bloor Street to the north, the Don Valley Parkway to the east and Lakeshore Boulevard to the south.

Those who violate rules will be "tagged and towed," Tory said.

"Traffic congestion is a reality in every major city," he said. "We are not going to accept the status quo here."

The blitz itself isn't a new idea; the city enacted a similar push in January. Tory promised to crack down on illegal parking in last year's municipal election campaign.

Before announcing the blitz, Tory said Wednesday morning that while the rules are currently being enforced, he had noticed "bad habits" had been seeping back into the system.
