Toronto police appeal for witnesses in death of male cyclist in Etobicoke

Toronto police are investigating the death of a 67-year-old male cyclist in Etobicoke and are calling on anyone who may have seen the man overnight to come forward.

Police said they received a call about a cyclist found lying on the ground on Evans Avenue near San Remo Terrace, between Islington Avenue and Royal York Road, at 3:48 a.m. Saturday.

The man was found without vital signs with a bicycle nearby, police said in a release. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Const. Allyson Douglas-Cook, spokesperson for Toronto police, said officers are trying to determine the circumstances of the man's death and whether or not those circumstances are criminal in nature.

"We're unclear how this person died until there is an autopsy," she said. "There's nothing indicating it is necessarily collision-related or criminal-related. But we are treating it as such until we can prove otherwise."

The man has not yet been identified, but is described in the release as white, wearing a red jacket with black track pants, black socks and black running shoes, clean-shaven with long grey hair. Police say he was riding a blue Infinity bicycle with a black milk crate strapped to the front.

Anyone who may have seen the cyclist on Evans Avenue, between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., is asked to contact police at 416-808-1900 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477.

A portion of Evans Avenue at San Remo Terrace was closed for a police investigation, but has since reopened.
