Toronto police investigate 'brazen' daylight shooting on Front Street West

Toronto police are investigating a daylight shooting on Front Street West that left the busy downtown street littered with bullets.

No one is reportedly injured, police said in a tweet. Police were called to the scene, west of the CBC Toronto Broadcast Centre, at 11:36 a.m.

Investigators believe two groups exchanged gunfire, according to Insp. Norm Proctor, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service.

There were two vehicles involved in the apparent exchange of gunfire and a crash that followed, he said. Officers are still piecing together the exact sequence of events.

"It is brazen. As I've said before, it's reckless and a complete disregard for human life and safety," Proctor told reporters near the scene.

"Unfortunately, it does happen from time to time and we're doing everything we can as a service and a community to try to stop this, but it is up to community members to come forward with any information they may have and again any witnesses who may have video," he said.

Proctor said a person in the black vehicle fled the scene after the crash and the white vehicle was last seen northbound on Spadina Avenue.

One witness told CBC News they heard gunshots near the intersection of Front Street West and Windsor Street and they stepped out onto their balcony to see a black car speeding away.

That car then slammed into an SUV near Front and Blue Jays Way and at least one person ran away on foot.

Photos from the scene show a white sedan covered in bullet holes. Police said shell casings were front near Front Street West and Windsor Street.

Officers are reviewing surveillance camera video and speaking to witnesses.

One CBC News producer reported hearing a volley of gunshots on her way to work. She and others took cover in a nearby building.

There is now a heavy police presence in the area, with officers interviewing several people about what they saw and heard.

Police wouldn't say if any arrests have been made at this time, saying only the investigation is ongoing.

No description of suspects has been released.
