Toronto police officer faces 2 charges in death of suicidal man in Toronto park

Police investigating after man with gunshot wounds admits himself to Scarborough hospital

A Toronto police officer has been charged with two offences in the death of a suicidal man in a Toronto park earlier this year, according to Ontario's Special Investigations Unit.

Const. Kyle Upjohn has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessaries of life. He is due to appear in a Toronto court on August 4.

The SIU said in a written statement released on Thursday that a man sought assistance from a police officer in connection with a suicide attempt by another man in High Park on Feb. 2 of this year. It happened at about 2 p.m. The suicidal man, 19, was pronounced dead close to 3:30 p.m. later that afternoon.

The SIU said its director, Tony Loparco, "has reasonable grounds to believe" the constable committed two criminal offences.

"The matter is now properly before the courts. In consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will make no further comment," the statement said.
