Toronto reveals list of major 2014 road projects

Road crews will be out tackling the usual problems on city roads in the weeks and months ahead, which means drivers need to be aware of what is coming their way.

On Monday, Denzil Minnan-Wong, the chair of the city’s public works and infrastructure committee, unveiled the list of major road work the city will undertake this year.

"We've got a lot of work planned this year and it’s going to go a long way in terms of keeping our roads and bridges in a state of good repair," Minnan-Wong said Monday.

In total, Minnan-Wong said the city expects to spend $215 million on various road, bridge and expressway projects. There will also be $60 million spent on sewer and watermain projects over this same time period.

As usual, the work being done will create problems for drivers at times. But the public works chair said that’s just the way it is.

"Some of this work just has to happen," Minnan-Wong said.

A long winter has also left the city with about twice the number of potholes that it normally must repair, Minnan-Wong said.

According to figures released by the city, crews have repaired 130,000 potholes in the period stretching from Jan. 1 through early April. The cost associated with these repairs is $2.2 million.

Over the same period last year, the city repaired 66,000 potholes at a cost of $1.3 million.
