Toronto street signs for sale, going once...
Beginning on April 28, Toronto's old street signs will be for sale to the highest bidder.
An online auction is set to start with the city's decommissioned street signs. Initially 100 signs will be posted for auction, but there will be 20 signs added per week, and a total of more than 1,700 will be for sale.
The signs will be available at an auction site called Platinum Liquidations.
There is no list of signs going on the site, so looking for specific streets signs will be a matter of checking the site often, according to the auctioneers.
The minimum opening bid is $30, and bidding will only be in increments of $5. The highest bidder after 60 days gets the street sign.
In 2007, Toronto began to replace damaged signs with new signs, with larger type and easier to read designs. Every year the city says it replaces about 1,800 street name signs due to age or damage to existing signs. In addition, not all signs that are removed from Toronto's streets will be available for purchase. Signs that are completely unreadable or are in extremely poor condition will be recycled instead of being offered for sale.
