Toronto teen Michelle Yu sorry for disappearance
A Toronto teen who turned up in British Columbia after going missing for several days has been reunited with her family and says she is sorry for the concern she caused.
Michelle Yu landed at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport late Monday afternoon, after flying home from Vancouver with her father.
"To the media, my friends, my family, my schoolmates, to my fellow Girl Guides and the greater community, I can't thank you guys enough for all your well wishes, your concerns, and all your prayers and your love and your support," Yu told reporters from the steps of her North York home in the York Mills and Leslie area.
"From the bottom of my heart, I'm so sorry for putting everybody through this," she added. "I'm just so happy to be home with my family, my parents,... my friends. I'm just glad to be back."
Yu wouldn't discuss the reasons why she went to Vancouver. When reporters tried to ask her about that, friends and family escorted her back into her house.
However, a police detective who spoke with Yu indicated the teenager told them she needed some space to clear her mind.
The 18-year-old York Mills Collegiate student had been missing since Tuesday, when she was last seen at a Toronto Dominion Bank branch in downtown Toronto.
Her family and friends were distraught that the teenager went missing and launched a high-profile campaign to alert the public about her disappearance.
However, Yu made telephone contact with her family on Sunday and spoke to them several times in the afternoon.
Her father then flew out to Vancouver Sunday night to reunite with her.
Toronto police Det. Darren Berezowski told CBC News that investigators will be following up with Yu and her family about what happened.
It is still not clear how Yu made her way to British Columbia and police are not offering any details.
