Toronto weather: Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016

Good morning and bundle up!

The long overdue blast of winter is finally here. The city has issued an extreme cold weather alert and advised people to dress warm and stay dry.

We will see a high of -7 C today but it will be around -25 with wind chill.

A mix of sun and cloud is expected during the day with northwest wind gusts around 20 kilometres an hour and possible lake effect flurries tonight in the GTA.

This year Toronto has only had four extreme cold weather alerts. The city had already seen 18 extreme cold weather alerts by this time last year and 24 in the year before that.

As the cold air spills across the relatively warm water of Huron and Georgian Bay we have snow squall watches and warnings in effect to our north including Barrie, Collingwood, Newmarket, Northern York Region and Northern Durham Region.

The bitter cold isn't going away anytime soon either. Tomorrow will be even colder with wind chill values in the low minus twenties and brisk northwest winds in the 25-40 kilometres an hour range.
