More than $33,300 has been raised to help pay for surgery for a dog who defended a 10-year-old from a coyote.
Dorothy Kwan, owner of Macy the Yorkie, said her 10-year-old daughter, Lily, was walking the dog in the Warden Ave. and St. Clair Ave. E area of Toronto when a coyote started chasing them.
"My dog was trying to protect my daughter who was yelling and screaming and end up getting attacked by this coyote on our neighbours front yard," the GoFundMe page reads.
"She received extensive injuries to her body and leg. She is undergoing surgery for her wounds at the emergency animal hospital. My heart is breaking for both my little one and our dog whom we rescued five years ago. I'm a single mom of two and my children and our dog mean everything to me."
An update from Kwan on Monday, Macy is "starting to do what she does best," which is "guarding my family."
"She heard a noise this morning and went to the window to investigate," the post reads.
Kwan goes on to thank everyone who supported the online fundraiser as Macy heads to her first follow up appointment after surgery.
"I want again to say thank you to everyone who donated and sent prayers and emails," Kwan wrote.
"My campaign has far surpassed my goal and the donations received will help both Macy and Lily in their recovery from this horrific incident as well as the hospital helping Macy’s recovery journey and other charities who may have pet owners requiring financial help with their fur babies. It is with great honour and gratitude our story can help so many others. People have shown us unwavering kindness."
Several supporters have also shared messaged of support for the family.
"Hoping that brave little pup is alright," one message reads.
"Whose a good girl? Whose the bravest pup-pup? What a sweet girl. We are all so happy to see she is home recovering nicely with her humans. Lily, I am so glad she was so fierce and determined to save you. What a good dog," another supporter wrote.
"I hope for a speedy recovery. Yorkies are so loyal and protective. I have one myself and your fur baby reminded me of mine," a third post reads.
