New tower soars near Thamesville

It’s a bird? It’s a plane? Maybe a drone?

Nope. It's two guys scaling a 250-foot Wifi tower.

The new Internet infrastructure was installed last week by MPV Wifi, south of Horst’s fruit farm on Magnavilla Line near Thamesville.

Greg Cameron and his cousin Matthew Vanheule are partners in the three-year-old company. MPV Wifi provides Internet service to around 1,000 customers in Chatham-Kent and Dawn-Euphemia.

Last week’s work was an expansion on an already existing tower.

The addition, lifted by a heavy-duty crane, adds another 150 feet to an original 100-foot tower.

Cameron says the upgrade will give customers better service and allow for expansion.

“We’ll be able to boost our capacity and offer faster speeds,” he explains.

Stouffville-based Guthries Mechanical Services was hired for the job, Cameron says, adding no local company could be found to take on the work on a tower of that height.

The two sections of the tower had to be securely joined. The workers also installed safety lights were at the top and midway points of the structure.
