Traffic stop in north Miami-Dade ends in car crash and a shooting, police say
A man remains hospitalized in Miami-Dade after a traffic stop Thursday night ended in a car crash and shooting, police say.
At about 11:16 p.m. Miami-Dade Police detectives attempted to stop a dark blue Mercedes Benz on Northwest 37th Ave. between 145th and 150th streets, when the driver fled but did not get very far before crashing into another car at Northwest 165th St. and 38th Place, police say.
The driver, a 21-year-old, and a 15-year-old passenger then ran but were quickly taken into custody. They left other passengers behind. Police didn’t say how many.
At the same time, gunfire erupted at the crash site, Detective Angel Rodriguez wrote in an email to the Miami Herald.
Police say a confrontation occurred between the remaining passengers and the civilian driver who fired at them when they approached him armed, causing them to flee.
A short time later, Miami Gardens Police got 911 call from a residence a few blocks away from the crash site about a man who had been shot in the arm.
Police say the wounded man was hit with gunfire from the civilian driver. Miami-Dade Police say their officers never fired any of their weapons, according to a press release.
The gunshot victim was taken to Aventura Hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue in stable condition with a wound to the arm, police say.
