Train fatality not criminal or accidental, say RCMP

RCMP say the man was on the tracks and the train didn't have time to stop.

Codiac Regional RCMP are still trying to determine what led to a pedestrian being struck and killed by a Via Rail passenger train in Moncton Thursday.

But "it does not appear that the incident was criminal or accidental in nature," Const. Damien Thériault stated in a release.

So far, the investigation has revealed the 27-year-old man was on the tracks and the train didn't have time to stop, he said.

The collision occurred east of the Elmwood Drive crossing, shortly after 5 p.m.

The man, who was from Moncton, died at the scene. His name is not being released pending notification of his family, Thériault said.

The Via Rail cars blocked Elmwood Drive for about an hour.

The train, the Ocean, was travelling from Halifax to Montreal when the collision occurred.
