Transit Windsor fare hike deferred by council

Bus fares in Windsor aren't going up — yet.

City council on Monday night deferred a decision on whether to hike bus fares in the new year.

Penny Williams is the general manager of Transit Windsor.

"City council has control over transit fares and the consensus was that it wants to take a look at the structure of Transit Windsor and see if there's a more balanced approach to [the budget]," Williams said. "We look forward to having the discussions."

Williams says that delay could cause problems in running the service.

"Depending on the timing of it, certainly there could be some variance that we have to build into the budget," Williams said. "Certainly that's something that's under council's control and we will follow council's direction."

The staff recommendation before council is fares be raised by a quarter, on average. The average fare would rise to $2.75.
