Treasure Exchange Days are happening soon

THUNDER BAY — Treasure Exchange Days are back this weekend.

Coming up on June 15 and 16, the city's twice-per-year goods exchange allows residents to put used items that are in good condition at their curb for free.

Residents can place items on the curb after 5 p.m. on Friday with a "free" label affixed to items.

A variety of items can be left out for pickup, like reusable household items, furniture, small appliances, toys, and more.

Solid Waste & Recycling Services manager Jason Sherband spoke about items not suitable to be treasure hunted.

"[Items] not in great shape and destined for the garbage or landfill . . . I would caution putting things like mattresses and bedding and that kind of stuff out."

Items must be removed from the curb by Sunday at 7 p.m. as the city's waste collection department will not be picking them up.

Sherband said to treat these days as if you're holding a yard sale and to bring stuff back from the curb if it doesn't go.

"We don't have the means to be going out and collecting all that stuff, and, certainly, the purpose of it is to give it away.

"So, sort of the same concept as if you were running a yard sale."

The city is holding a "best treasure" contest, where treasure hunters are invited to share some of the best items they find over the weekend through the city's social media pages.

Treasure Exchange Days, which began in 2014, is an Action Item in the city’s Solid Waste Management Strategy. For more information, visit www.thunderbay.ca/treasuredays.
