Multiple school districts will close or delay classes Thursday as Tropical Storm Debby makes its way through North Carolina, threatening widespread floods.

As of Wednesday afternoon:

Wake County schools will close Thursday. Extracurricular activities are canceled.

Durham Public Schools will be closed Thursday. All after-school activities are also canceled. The DPS Board meeting will be held virtually at youtube.com/@durhampublicschoolsboardof2290.

Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools will cancel all classes Thursday. The district has also postponed athletics and other student activities both Thursday and Friday.

All Orange County schools will be closed Thursday, including Hillsborough Elementary.

Some other Triangle school systems are expected to follow suit for their year-round schools that are now in session.

Tropical Storm Debby is expected to come ashore late Wednesday and Thursday, moving across North Carolina as it dumps rain over already saturated ground.

Gov. Roy Cooper has issued a state of emergency and warned that the flooding risk from Debby will last for several days as the storm trudges further north.
