I Tried The Most Popular Items At Whataburger—The Texas Version Of In-N-Out

From Delish

I'm from Texas but I live in Los Angeles now, and there are some fast food chains that I miss dearly. What-A-Burger is on top of that list. Every time I go home to visit my family, it doesn't take long before I spot an orange-and-white striped triangular building. My mouth instantly starts watering and I can't continue my day without getting an order of chicken strips, Texas toast, gravy, fries, and a Rootbeer.

Texans are proud to be Texans. If there is even the slightest opportunity to tell someone we are from the Lone Star state, we will take it in a heartbeat. That's why we take pride in the fact that What-A-Burger was born in Texas. Another reason the fast food chain is so beloved is they serve up the food just how you like it. There are more than 36,864 ways you can customize your order, and they don't think twice about it if you ask.

It had been a year since I visited my hometown, so when I went, you know I had to give the W a visit. I took a trip down memory lane and tried the most popular items on the menu. Here's what I thought!

Onion Rings

I don't know what they put in their batter but their onion rings have a sweet element to them that I love. The batter is also thin, crispy, and never greasy so you can eat a whole large order without feeling it in the pit of your stomach.

French Fries

Listen, these fries do the job. Are they my favorite fast food french fries? NO. There really isn't anything special about them; they are just your standard regular shmegular fries. And that's OK because W.A.B has so many other unique items.

Honey BBQ Chicken Strip Sandwich

This is heavenly! The chicken strips are tender, the BBQ sauce is sweet yet tangy, the two slices of Monterey Jack cheese are perfect, and it's all sandwiched together with perfectly buttered Texas Toast. I am salivating as I type this. Damn you, LA.

Mushroom Swiss Burger

I am *not* a fan of this burger but that's only because I am not a huge mushroom person. This burger is on the "favorites" menu so someone likes it!

Sweet & Spicy Bacon Burger

The sweet and spicy sauce they put on this burger is delicious and adds a unique flavor that elevates the regular bacon cheese burger.

OMG. YUM! Alexa, play "This Is What Dreams Are Made Of" by Hilary Duff.

The classic! When Harmon Dobson founded the company in 1950, he wanted to create a burger so large you needed both hands to eat it so that customers would exclaim "What a burger!". Can confirm; that is exactly what went through my head when I went in on this burger.

Bacon and Cheese Whataburger

This is the same as the Whataburger but with cheese and bacon. Fun Fact: Did you know that all of the burgers come with mustard and you have to ask for ketchup? Crazy, right?

Jalapeño and Cheese Whataburger

Add a little spice to your life! Jalapeños add so much flavor to this burger but they also add a kick so just make sure to keep a cold soda close by.

Hatch Green Chile Burger

Imagine mixing bell peppers and jalapeños together and smoking them on the grill. That's the flavor you get with this Hatch Green Chile Burger. Hatch green chiles are huge in Texas especially during the summer. You can compare their popularity to the PSL everywhere else in the country. This burger was definitely one of my favorites.

Avocado Bacon Burger

I was a little disappointed in this burger as it was a bit bland. I really thought this was going to be one of my favorites. The good news is you can customize your order: I would recommend adding creamy pepper sauce or bbq for some extra flavor.

Whatachicken Sandwich

You can't go wrong with marinated fried chicken with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and mayo on a toasted bun!

At Whataburger, they have spent time meticulously crafting the Spicy Chicken Sandwich recipe, and it shows with each bite. It packs a delicious blend of marinated, crispy chicken that's spicy from within. Make sure to try it soon because this baby is only available for a limited time.

I normally don't like ordering fish from fast food restaurants but I will order this again. The texture was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside and the sandwich as a whole was worth it.

Chicken Fajita Taco

I say leave the fajitas to the professionals and get this taco from an authentic Mexican Restaurant, but Whataburger is at least giving you options!

Whatachicken Bites

I had to save the best for last. Whatchicken Bites and strips are my favorite thing on the menu. I know it's ironic that chicken is my favorite thing at a burger joint but these baskets are nostalgic for me. Their flavor is unlike any other I've tried from a fast food chain. They soak their chicken tenders in buttermilk which makes them tender and extra flavorful. The breading is also seasoned well, so these don't taste bland as chicken breasts often can. Then you pair it with their peppered gravy, and OH MY GOODNESS after one bite you're transported to heaven. I could go on and on, but I'll sum it up by saying they're truly the best fast food chicken bites/strips EVER.

Make sure to check out the full video to see my review on their desserts, too!
