Donald Trump began his day by tweeting a series of bizarre and misleading claims, including suggesting that UK prime minister Boris Johnson is “looking for a British version” of White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany. He then spent much of the day at Trump National Golf Course in Virginia.

The US president’s tirade on Twitter comes amid an explosive row brewing in Congress over Republican attempts to ram through a Supreme Court nominee before November’s election, despite the fact Republican senate majority leader Mitch McConnell prevented Barack Obama from nominating his preferred judge in 2016, on the justification that a president should not be able to do so in an election year.

Democrats have said everything is on the table in their response to the Republican moves to fill the vacant spot on the bench.

At an address in Philadelphia in the afternoon, Joe Biden called out McConnell and other Senate Republicans for what he said amounts to "constitutional abuse" by not allowing voters to have a say given that ballots are already being cast in the election.

The death toll from the coronavirus pandemic continues to mount, hitting 200,000 dead on Saturday by some counts. There have been 6.8 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 nationwide.
