Trump supporters faced with facts from Jan. 6 hearings struggle to accept the truth

When former President Donald Trump's American Freedom Tour pulled into Mississippi last week, The Daily Show’s Jordan Klepper tagged along. On Thursday's show, Klepper shared some of the conversations he had with attendees regarding the ongoing January 6 House select committee hearings.

Attendees were shown video testimonies from the former president's closest allies and family, but many refused to accept the information being presented to them. For example, one gentleman was shown a video of Ivanka Trump testifying that she believed Attorney General William Barr's assertion that no voter fraud was committed in the 2020 election.

"I respect Attorney General Barr," Ivanka had said, "So I accepted what he was saying."

At first, he believed the footage of the former president’s daughter was edited. Then he asked, "Did she say it on Twitter?"

None of the Trump supporters Klepper spoke with had watched the hearings, but one woman showed interest in an investigative hearing into Nancy Pelosi. She believed the Speaker of the House created the mob of people who attacked her and other House members on Jan. 6.

"She wanted to be able to blame it on the Trump supporters and have something bad to say about them," the woman explained.

While most of the attendees refused to believe any information stemming from the Jan. 6 hearings, a few supporters acknowledged the testimony from Trump's own cabinet. However, they just didn't particularly care.

"Does that change your perspective and your assumptions?" Klepper asked an attendee.

"It does," replied the man, who then shared that he was still going to watch the former president's speech.

The Daily Show With Trevor Noah airs weeknights at 11 p.m. on Comedy Central.
