TTC to remove all Sunday-only streetcar stops on June 7
The Toronto Transit Commission will remove all 41 Sunday-only streetcar stops beginning on June 7, the transit agency announced on Friday.
The decision was made after consulting with the public and city councillors, the TTC said. It was approved by the board in May 2014.
Sunday stops were established in the 1920s to reduce walking distance to nearby churches, according to the TTC. However, they are too close to existing adjacent stops.
Streetcar stops should be between 250 to 350 metres apart, and no less than 200 metres to one another, according to the TTC's transportation best practices.
Sunday stops, however, are about 100 metres from an adjacent regular stop on average.
Notices about the removal have been posted at all affected Sunday stops.
TTC is also adjusting all streetcar stops to ensure they are located at intersections or crosswalks with signals.
