Tudor and Cashel waste site theft

In a posting to their Facebook page on Jan. 8, Tudor and Cashel Township revealed that there had been a theft at one of their waste sites, the Grimsthorpe site, and that due to health and safety concerns the site would be closed until further notice. In the meantime, according to the posting, the township’s other waste site in Millbridge would be open to accommodate any traffic from the Grimsthorpe site during its regular hours.

Nancy Carrol, the clerk and treasurer, told Bancroft This Week on Jan. 10 that the Grimsthorpe site, located just off Weslemkoon Road in Tudor and Cashel Township, had been broken into over the winter holidays. She said that the theft included the site’s furnace.

“With temperatures dipping below -20 degrees on Saturday, it was a health and safety concern for the staff as there is no hydro available at the site to allow for alternative heat,” she says.

The township has two waste sites; the Grimsthorpe site is located south off Weslemkoon Road at Scootamata Road, while the Millbridge site is located at 8386 Hastings Road, just north of West Road. The winter hours, from Sept. 16 to May 14, for the Grimsthorpe site, which the Millbridge site will be accommodating until the former reopens, are Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday from noon to 4 p.m. The winter hours for the Millbridge site are Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday from noon to 4 p.m.

Carrol said that the theft at the Grimsthorpe site had occurred after hours and that the police were contacted and a report was filed. She has not heard if there are any firm leads with regards to the theft.

“A replacement [furnace] has been ordered and we are hoping that it will be installed so that the site can be back to regular operations by Saturday, Jan. 15,” she says. “At this time, we will shift the hours of the Grimsthorpe site to the Millbridge waste site so that access is still available during the regular hours.”
