We’ve heard all the warning: beware of Mercury Retrograde—it messed up my life and it’ll get you too, my pretty!!! (BTW, the next Mercury Retrograde, um, is happening right TF now *cue haunted house sounds*) As an astrologer, this slander (!) is frustrating because most of it is far from the truth. Before submitting to Mercury Retrograde sh*t talk, let’s debunk a few astro myths to squash your fears. And maybe even inspire you to embrace the Retrograde with open arms…cautiously.

Myth No. 1: Dating is a disaster.

So you may meet someone and start a relationship faster than usual. Now, the myth is that you’ll break up when Mercury turns direct. Yeah, no. Most of the time, people stay in partnerships formed during the retrograde. What happens is that both people don’t understand the partnership they are in and what draws them together. Or, others think it’s a weird coupling. Neither of you will think the relationship makes sense—but here you are: united as one.

Myth No. 2: You’ll reconcile with an ex.

Former flames often zombie us and resurface during Retrograde due to the fact that Mercury is slowed down in the sky and we are thinking about the past. And most people assume that it’s a great time to reach out to ghosts of relationships past during this time. However, more often than not it brings old issues back in the mix and reawakens past feelings—some of which may not be good. So if you still don’t like ‘em, you won’t suddenly be back in a relationship together, mmkay?

Myth No. 3: A breakup that starts now will not be permanent.

We’ve all gotten into arguments with our S.O. or crushes during Mercury Retrograde and while the majority of the time we can manage to make up instead of break up, it’s not necessarily the case. Retrogrades are a time of revisions and reassessing situations and relationships, which is why they serve as a time to kick a toxic partnership to the curb for good because we can see the problems clearly while Mercury is slowed down. Unfortunately, endings can be permanent. Yes, you’ll come back together at some point in the future—but not in the way you may hope. Mostly likely as casual FB acquaintances.

Myth No. 4: It’s a bad time to start a new project.

I’m a firm believer that life must go on even if Mercury is moonwalking backwards. You can totally start a new project at this time, as long as you are open to making changes along the way (which isn’t necessarily a retrograde notion, rather just a fact of business and creative endeavors). Try to keep an open mind and be flexible with your goals and everything will work out for you in the end.

Myth No. 5: Never sign contracts or invest money during this time.

As I said above, life must go on. If you’re signing a lease or making an investment that needs to be made it’s advisable to check out the daily transits. If the Sun and Mercury Retrograde are aligned, then it’s a go. Also, if the Moon is in Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius, and Pisces you’ll be fine (especially if the Moon is in Sagittarius). And, ask a trusted friend or family member to look over your contracts, leases, and investment opportunities to get their opinions to ensure you don’t get bamboozled. Everything stated above is what you should be doing anyway, regardless of Mercury’s backspin.

Myth No. 6: Travel will be chaotic.

TBH, when is it not?? While Mercury’s backtrack may bring unexpected issues our way, we should always give ourselves extra time when heading out of town. (Yep, your mom was right.) Unforeseen and uncontrollable things happen. We can’t control the weather, but we can make sure we have an extra 15 minutes to organize ourselves to ensure we don’t miss flights, trains, or avoid traffic.
