TVLine Items: Idol Sets Post-Oscars Preview, AFI Awards TV Honorees and More
American Idol will show off its new judging panel after the Oscars.
A special preview of the competition series’ new season will air following the live Oscars telecast on Sunday, March 2, on ABC. The program will provide a first look at some hopeful auditions and new judge Carrie Underwood alongside Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and host Ryan Seacrest.

The eighth season of Idol on ABC (and the franchise’s 23rd season overall) premieres with a two-hour episode on Sunday, March 9 at 8/7c.

* Honorees for the AFI Awards 2024’s Programs of the Year include Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, A Man on the Inside, Mr & Mrs. Smith, Nobody Wants This, The Penguin, Shōgun, Shrinking and True Detective: Night Country. Additionally, Baby Reindeer received the AFI Special Award, “designated for works of excellence that fall outside of AFI Awards’ eligibility criteria.”
* Ahead of its 50th anniversary special (airing Feb. 16), Saturday Night Live will last air Jan. 25. The season will then resume a month later, on March 1, Late Nighter reports.
* BritBox has released its 2025 slate, and it includes premiere dates for Vera Season 14 (Jan. 2), A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story (Feb. 17), Lost Boys & Faeries (March 4), Hugh Bonneville’s Douglas Is Cancelled (March 6), Travels With Agatha Christie & Sir David Suchet (March 8) and David Mitchell’s Ludwig (March 20). Additionally, Father Brown Season 12 is penciled in for January, Death in Paradise Season 14 for February, Beyond Paradise Season 3 for April and, for summer, Silent Witness Season 28, The Cleaner Season 3 and Sister Boniface Mysteries Season 4.
* Government Cheese, Apple TV+’s new surrealist family comedy series starring David Oyelowo (Lawman: Bass Reeves), will premiere with its first four episodes on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through May 28.
* Peacock has released a new trailer for the limited series Lockerbie: A Search for Truth, starring Colin Firth and premiering Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025 with all five episodes:
