Car crashes in Halifax and Cape Breton kill 2, injure 5 others

Two people are dead and five others were sent to hospital with injuries after two separate car crashes in Halifax and Cape Breton over the weekend.

Fatal crash near Mineville

At around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, a Dodge Caravan and Volkswagen Jetta collided on Highway 107 near the Mineville Road exit, said Halifax RCMP.

The woman driving the Jetta was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two adults and two children were in the van and all four people were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The adults were taken to the QEII Health Sciences Centre while the children are being treated at the IWK Health Centre.

An accident reconstructionist was brought in to examine the scene.

Highway 107 near Exit 18 was closed for several hours after the crash.

1 dead after Cape Breton crash

In Cape Breton, a man died after a single vehicle crash early Sunday morning in South Bar near Highway 28.

Police said a car with two men inside left the road and crashed at around 1:30 a.m. The 40-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 29-year-old man, who was a passenger in the vehicle, did not suffer any serious injuries. He was sent to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and later released.

The identity of the man who died has not been disclosed.

Police are continuing to investigate.
