A pair of dogs have died, while serval others collapsed from heatstroke at a pet show after owners insisted on bringing them out at the height of summer.

Witnesses at Pet Fair Asia in Shanghai, China, said at least a dozen dogs began foaming at the mouth as they stood around for hours in 35C temperatures.

Worried pet owners had to splash their dogs with water and fan them with air to try and alleviate the symptoms of heatstroke, which in the end claimed the lives of two pooches.

Pet Fair Asia, an international tradeshow for pet supplies for dogs, cats, fish, turtles and the like is hosted every year and has been massively popular with owners looking for the latest in animal care and innovative products.

But event organisers, knowing that the expo takes place in summer, warned participants to leave their pets at home, warning they could suffer sunstroke.

Pet Fair Asia later told local media that those who insisted on bringing their dogs or turtles “lacked basic knowledge” of pet care, citing the repeated calls for animals to be left at home.

Pet ownership has increased in China over the years as a direct result of a rise in the middle classes.
