The RCMP have arrested two men who allegedly broke into two different churches in Grand Falls-Windsor.

Earlier this week, the RCMP said it was investigating at least six complaints of break-ins and thefts from churches and church halls in the town.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with one of those, which occurred at the Salvation Army Church on Aug.1.

He has been charged with possession of stolen property and breaking and entering.

Police say in a separate incident at the United Church on Earl Street — and unrelated to the alleged string of break-ins — a 39-year-old man from Bonavista has been charged with breaking and entering, mischief, and several breaches of court orders.

The RCMP credits a tip from the public in helping in the latter incident.

The two accused appeared in provincial court in Grand Falls-Windsor on Friday.

RCMP said a string of crimes in the area have seen property damage and thefts from churches and businesses that have been broken into. Money, computers, and alcohol were reportedly stolen from six different churches.

A police spokesperson said the other five complaints made earlier this week are still being investigated.
